Comprehensive Canine Care at Harvey Memorial Animal Hospital

At Harvey Memorial Animal Hospital, we believe every dog deserves personalized, preventive care to ensure they have the best chance at living a long, healthy, and happy life. Regular wellness exams are vital for your pet's health and wellbeing and at Harvey, our team follows the latest recommendations from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the American Heartworm Society (AHS), and the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) to keep your dog healthy through all life stages.

Preventive Care and Wellness Exams

Regular checkups are the foundation of lifelong health, and our Wellness plans are customized to cover every lifestyle.

  • Wellness visits every 6–12 months allow for early detection of health issues and allow for updates to your dog's individualized care plan.
  • Year round prevention and annual Heartworm testing is recommended to keep your pet protected against heartworm disease.
  • Fecal parasite testing should be performed multiple times during puppyhood and at least twice yearly for adult dogs to protect you and your dog from parasite infection.

Core and Lifestyle-Based Vaccines

Although we can never fully prevent exposure to a disease, vaccinations CAN protect your dog from life-threatening symptoms caused by diseases and helps to protect you, your family, and the public from the spread of diseases.

Core vaccines (recommended for all dogs):

  • Distemper (CDV)
  • Parvovirus (CPV)
  • Adenovirus (CAV-2, protects against hepatitis and kennel cough)
  • Rabies (required by law in most regions)
  • Leptospirosis – recommended for most dogs due to its widespread presence and zoonotic risk

Lifestyle vaccines (based on exposure and regional risk):

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica – protects against kennel cough for social or boarding dogs
  • Canine influenza – for dogs in group settings or boarding
  • Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) – for dogs in or traveling to endemic areas

Puppies start vaccines at 6–8 weeks, and require boosters for those vaccines every 3–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age. Vaccines can then be and annual boosters thereafter, as long as they stay consistent. Adult dogs typically receive boosters every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine and lifestyle of the pet.

Parasite Prevention

As the weather changes and bugs become more abundant, year-round parasite control is essential for your dog's health and family safety.

  • We offer a wide range of monthly prevention against heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks to best suit your pets needs.
  • Annual heartworm testing and routine fecal checks ensure early detection of illness and help keep your pet parasite free.
  • Flea, tick and mosquito prevention help protect you and your family against zoonotic diseases such as Lyme disease.

Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Safety

  • Feed only nutritionally balanced diets; avoid raw food diets to protect from the transmission of Salmonella and other food borne illnesses.
  • Never feed your pet hard treats, small rawhides, or other potentially dangerous toys that could break into sharp pieces or become choking hazards.
  • Do not allow your pet to have rawhides, bull sticks, or animal chews without proper supervision.
  • Provide daily exercise and mental enrichment to maintain physical and emotional health.
  • Microchip identification ensures your pet can be returned if lost.
  • Spay or neuter pets to prevent life threatening, long term health and behavioral issues.
  • Leashed walks and secure fencing at home helps protect pets and wildlife.
  • Always pick up and properly dispose of animal waste to reduce disease risk.
